Kia Ora, Willkommen and Hi,
My name is Laura and I am the founder of Vonuts – Vegan Donuts.
Growing up in a small village in eastern Germany, some of my fondest childhood memories are of my Oma (Grandma) making jam filled Donuts. I remember the smell filling her kitchen and my excitement and impatience when she told me I had to wait for them to cool down.
Seven years ago, I went vegan. Having been raised on a small family farm, this was a huge change – but one that I have celebrated every day since. Veganism, for me, is not just about eating plant based food, it is about living a compassionate life towards all living beings – but of course, my diet changed, too. No more jam filled Donuts from my Oma. When I moved to Berlin for University I discovered a vegan bakery making donuts almost as good as my Oma’s.
I guess it’s the memories that make the extra special taste.
For many years I indulged until, in 2019 I followed the love of my life to the sunny shores of Hawkes Bay and found myself donut-less once again. With the 2020 border closures, Germany seemed further away than ever. So, that year, I decided to try making my own donut-shaped pieces of home. Armed with a deep fryer I got for my birthday, I dedicated myself to making donuts my Oma would be proud of. 200Kg flour, a move to Wellington, a baby and 42 meltdowns later I started my own Vegan Donut business – Vonuts.
